Ivy Tech Community College celebrated $12 million in renovations to its East Chicago campus with a ribbon cutting Oct. 8.

The project included upgrades to its enrollment, automotive, welding and industrial technology areas.

“With the completion of this project, we're not just enhancing our physical space. We're expanding our students’ horizons,” said Chancellor Marcos Rodriquez in a press release. “These updates reflect our commitment to providing a dynamic learning environment so students can thrive, learn hands-on skills and prepare for their futures. This transformation is a testament to our dedication to fostering excellence and supporting the growth of every learner who walks through our doors.”

The project started in August of 2023 and was completed a year later at 410 E. Columbus Drive.

“Through this project, we are providing students with cutting-edge equipment and skills in essential career fields that support our employer partners and community growth,” President Sue Ellspermann said. “This investment elevates our educational offerings and demonstrates our commitment to offer modernized educational options to the Lake County community.”

Upgrades include new windows, lighting and furniture, main stairway realignment and a new upstairs concourse cut out in the lobby ceiling.

The building originally was designed by late architect Helmut Jahn in 1979. GMB, Berglund Construction and Larson-Danielson made sure the building honored his legacy.

“The updated facility now reflects the energy of the programs it houses and showcases the type of innovative learning that is happening within these walls,” said Katy Candau, project lead and architect with GMB, which provided architectural services. “This transformation truly enhances the college’s recruitment and retention efforts and is a facility the whole community can be proud of.”

The campus also has locations at 9900 Connecticut Drive in Crown Point, and in the arts and sciences building on the Indiana University Northwest campus, 3491 Broadway, Gary.
