Centier on top of Forbes’ 2024 list of Best Banks In Each State

Merrillville-based Centier Bank earned the top spot on Forbes list of Best Banks In Each State for 2024.

The seventh annual ranking was developed in partnership with Statista, which surveys about 26,000 U.S. residents.

“We remain humbled and inspired by this continued recognition, and it’s an honor to occupy the top spot on this year’s list representing the best banks serving Indiana residents,” said Michael Schrage, chief executive officer and chairman of the board at Centier Bank, in a press release. “This continued achievement is a testament to our dedicated team’s unwavering commitment to providing exceptional service and fostering strong relationships with our clients. We will continue to prioritize our community’s financial well-being and strive for excellence in all that we do.”

This is Centier's seventh consecutive year on the list. It has more than 60 offices in 11 Indiana counties and employs more than 1,000 people. It also was listed No. 40 on Forbes' 2024 list of the World's Best Banks.

Other Indiana banks to make the list include:

  1. First Farmers Bank & Trust
  2. Alliance Bank
  3. 1st Source Bank
  4. Huntington Bank

1st Source Bank, based in South Bend, has 78 branches and employs more than 1,100 people.

Chicago-based Wintrust Bank landed the top spot for Illinois banks. It has locations in Dyer and Crown Point.

First Financial Bank based in Cincinnati, Ohio, was ranked No. 4 in that state. It has branches in Schererville, Highland, Gary, Hammond, Crown Point and Hobart.

According to Forbes, there are more than 4,000 banks and 70,000 branches nationwide. This list includes 185 banks.

Forbes also released its list of America's Best Credit Unions in Each State. IU Credit Union based in Bloomington earned the top spot. South bend-based Everwise Credit Union was fifth. It employs more than 700 people and has locations in southwest Michigan and Indiana.

The rankings were determined, in part, from online reviews and rankings. Eighty percent of the research was done by using surveys of bank users and former customers.
