Highland-based Fair Haven Rape Crisis Center received $1.8 million to support plans for a housing facility for victims of sexual violence.
The gift is comprised of funding from the Economic Development Initiative and the HOME Investment Partnerships American Rescue Plan Program.
“The funding secured for Fair Haven Rape Crisis Center underscores our commitment to supporting survivors and providing them with the resources they need to heal and rebuild their lives,” Congressman Frank Mrvan said in a press release.
The funding will help Fair Haven acquire their rented office building and renovate their facilities. It will also support Fair Haven's plan to expand to the new Portside Suites housing facility.
Portside Suites will create four secure stabilization housing units for adults fleeing from dating violence, sexual assault, stalking or human trafficking. The facility will offer individual living spaces and case management services.
“Portside Suites isn't just a building; it’s hope for survivors of sexual violence seeking refuge,” said Kelly Vates, Fair Haven founder and executive director. “By providing survivors with safe, individualized housing, personalized case management, therapy and support services, we create opportunities for empowerment and healing.”
The crisis center is seeking help from individuals, businesses and community groups to raise the remaining $373,150 to fully fund the campaign.
In 2023, Fair Haven supported 498 survivors of abuse and provided prevention education to 22,529 students. Fair Haven’s services are free.
Fair Haven Rape Crisis Center offers programs aimed at promoting healing and preventing future incidents of sexual violence. Founded in 2005, the nonprofit serves Lake, Porter and La Porte counties.
