Northwest Health names new chief medical officer

Valparaiso-based Northwest Health appointed Dr. Thomas Rohs as chief medical officer for all Northwest Health hospitals effective May 6.

Rohs’ career in health care spans over 25 years. He brings clinical experience to his new role and has special interests in medical staff and professional leadership development. Roh also has experience in hospital operations and community and board relations.

“His wealth of experience, dedication to excellence and collaborative leadership style will be an  asset to our medical staffs and executive teams as we continue to strive for excellence in patient care,” said Dr. James Leonard, Northwest Health – Porter CEO, and Simon Ratliff, Northwest Health – La Porte and Starke CEO, in communication to their staffs. 

Rohs graduated from The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency and surgical critical care fellowship at the University of Michigan Hospitals. 

Rohs practiced general and trauma surgery in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for the last 25 years. During his time in Michigan, he served as the trauma medical director at Ascension Borgess Hospital. Rohs also held numerous leadership positions, including chief of the medical staff. He served as chief medical officer for the hospital’s southwest Michigan region and regional president and CEO.  

Rohs served on the Michigan Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons for two decades. He returned to clinical surgery, resident education and consulting in May 2023.

Northwest Health has hospitals in La Porte, Porter and Starke counties. The health care network includes outpatient medical centers, urgent care centers and physician offices. Northwest Health has over 3,000 employees and over 700 physicians on its staff.
