The Computer Skills and Training Center and the Center of Workforce Innovations are collaborating to launch a new learning center.
To mark the occasion, they are hosting an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Jan. 26 at the Faith Community Center, 1351 W. 11th Ave. in Gary.
Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the offerings at the center, meet staff members and tour the training center.
The center will offer specialized training for adult learners who are interested in pursuing careers in construction skilled trades. The curriculum includes career paths in construction, carpentry, electrical work, HVAC, plumbing and roofing. Students will be able to engage in hands-on, work-based learning. They will have the opportunity to earn National Center for Construction Education and Research certification.
The mission of the Gary-based Computer Skills and Training Center is to provide pathways for education and workforce training for individuals of all ages. They aim to empower individuals academically, vocationally, economically and socially. The center also offers youth work ethics and mentorship programs.
Dennis Walton is the founder and CEO of the Computer Skills and Training Center. The partnership with the Center of Workforce Innovations was forged to meet workforce needs in the community. Together they aim to address immediate job opportunities, foster economic stability and empower individuals in Gary.
The Center of Workforce Innovations is a nonprofit workforce development organization. Located in Valparaiso, the center was founded in 2000. They serve Jasper, La Porte, Newton, Porter, Pulaski and Starke counties. The organization’s goal is to help prepare a high-quality workforce in Northwest Indiana.
