U.S. Rep. Frank Mrvan recently announced that Burns Harbor will receive a $120,000 federal grant from the Department of Transportation.
The grant is part of the Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program. The program aims to improve roadway safety in communities. The grant funding supports communities in planning and implementing infrastructure projects designed to reduce transportation-related injuries and fatalities.
“Local roads are dangerous. With high volumes of semi-trucks and cars passing by daily, the town is concerned with making Burns Harbor more safe, especially along U.S. 12/20 intersections and at-grade CSX crossings,” said Jennifer McHargue, Burns Harbor town council president, in a press release.
The town council plans to work with community members and partners to understand the safety issues and find innovative ways to reduce accidents and fatalities. As a growing community, the demand for connected neighborhoods, parks and trails has increased.
“Families most often drive to in-town destinations, like Lakeland Park and the Indiana Dunes National Park, because there is no safe way to travel by foot, bike or motorized wheelchair,” said Roseann Bozak, Burns Harbor redevelopment commission president. “Safe and well-connected neighborhoods, businesses and recreation will be a key driver for the long-term economic growth of Burns Harbor and the Northwest Indiana region.”
The Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant program was created under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The act was signed into law during the 117th Congress. Rep. Mrvan previously announced SS4A grant awards for the cities of East Chicago, Gary and Hammond.
