Purdue University Northwest was promoted to the First Scholars phase by the Center for First-generation Student Success.

To earn the First Scholars designation, the university demonstrated continuous efforts to support first-generation students.

The Washington, D.C.-based Center for First-generation Student Success facilitates the First Scholars Network of Institutions, of which PNW is a member.

Members of the network work to change the higher education landscape to better support first-generation students. PNW earned the First-Gen Forward Institution status in spring 2022.

“The designation of First Scholars serves as institutional proof that we are committed to integrating the first-generation college scholar experience into the essence of PNW for generations to come,” said Ronnell DuBose, executive director for diversity, inclusivity and belonging at PNW, in a press release.

Over 56% of the undergraduate students at PNW are first-generation students, their parents or guardians didn't complete a four-year degree.

To support first-generation students PNW provides educational opportunity programs, hosts events and collaborates with the Indiana 21st Century Scholars Program. The university also funds research to advance the academic success of first-generation students. They plan to expand their tutoring and mentoring programs.

Elizabeth Babcock Depew, vice chancellor for enrollment management and student affairs at PNW, called the new designation a vote of confidence.

Upon meeting milestones in the First Scholars phase, PNW would be eligible to earn the Champion Campus designation.

PNW has campuses in Hammond and Westville. They serve approximately 8,900 undergraduate and graduate students. Students from 30 states and 50 countries attend the university. PNW has been recognized among the best regional universities in the U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings.
