Methodist Hospitals was ranked among the best in the nation at patient care, according to the Lown Institute.
The health system earned an “A” grade on the 2023-24 Lown Institute Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility. The Lown Institute assesses and grades over 3,600 hospitals nationwide. They evaluate more than 50 measures, including health equity, patient outcomes and value of care.
Methodist Hospitals secured the No. 7 spot in Indiana out of 96 hospitals. It landed within the top 10% nationally for social responsibility.
Notably, they claimed the No. 1 position in Indiana and achieved a top 10 ranking nationally for racial inclusivity. They also received “A” grades for health equity, inclusivity, value of care and cost efficiency.
“We are gratified that our efforts to deliver cost-efficient, high-value care to our diverse community with an equally diverse staff have been acknowledged by the Lown Institute,” said Matt Doyle, president and CEO of Methodist Hospitals, in a press release.
The Lown Hospitals Index is the sole ranking to incorporate health equity and care value alongside patient outcomes. The institute examines data from Medicare claims, patient safety information, hospital reports and other documents. They are a nonpartisan think tank with the goal of improving health systems in the U.S.
“When communities have access to socially responsible health care, our nation grows stronger,” said Dr. Vikas Saini, president of the Lown Institute. “That’s why it’s so important to hold up these high-performing hospitals as examples for others to follow.”
Methodist Hospitals is a community-based health system that has served Northwest Indiana for a century. It has acute care facilities in Gary and Merrillville.
The health system has award-winning programs in neuroscience and oncology. They provide a broad spectrum of care, from emergency services to rehabilitation to behavioral health. Methodist Hospitals employs 556 physicians and health professionals.
