Former State Sen. Michael Griffin will serve as Merrillville's town manager until a search for the permanent position is complete.
Merrillville's Town Council unanimously voted Aug. 29 to make Griffin the interim town manager.
“I’m glad he’s on board,” Town Councilman Leonard White said in a press release.
Griffin has more than 35 years of experience serving at all levels of government. He served eight terms as Highland's clerk-treasurer. There he was responsible for an operating budget of more than $19 million, and the payroll for 150 to 200 part- and full-time employees.
“I see public office — whether elected or appointed — as an opportunity to serve the public,” Griffin said. “I find that the Merrillville Town Council members share this view. So, I am thrilled to be granted this opportunity to serve this Town Council as it serves the people of Merrillville.”
Griffin was selected in a caucus to fulfill the unexpired term of former State Sen. Frank Mrvan in 2022. He also is an adjunct instructor at Indiana University Northwest.
Steve King, Merrillville’s engineering administrator and street department director, served as acting town manager since Patrick Reardon resigned in July.
