The Mississippi Crossings project that will bring a Tropical Smoothie Cafe, Crumbl Cookies and American Mattress to Merrillville got underway May 12.

Project and town officials gathered for a groundbreaking on the 7,500-square-foot facility at 1600 E. 79th Ave.

“Mississippi Crossings is one of several developments currently underway in town, and I’m looking forward to seeing it come to fruition,” Town Manager Patrick Reardon said in a press release.

Merrillville Economic Development Director Angie Chilcott said residents are excited too, especially because Crumbl Cookies is becoming more popular in the Region.

Merrillville Development LLC is investing about $3 million in the new building, while the tenants plan to invest another $1.3 million in the property. Town Councilman Shawn Pettit said about 60 new jobs will be created.

Town officials said the project should be ready by March 2024.

Region Contractors, which will be handling construction, confirmed the timeline.

“This project went very smoothly,” said Nick Georgiou, an owner of Region Contractors.

Latitude Commercial announced the project earlier this year.
