History
In 1991, what is today Northwest Indiana Business Magazine, began as Northwest Indiana Magazine, an economic development business news publication founded by Indianapolis native Glee Renick-May. The magazine started as a joint venture and partnership with Northwest Indiana Forum, a regional economic development organization with a mission to spotlight local business success and economic vitality across 10 counties in Northern Indiana.
For more than a decade, the magazine was printed biannually under the ownership of Curtis Magazines Inc. and Eric Servaas, former publisher of Northwest Indiana Magazine. In 2002, the publication grew from a biannual to a quarterly magazine and was renamed Northwest Indiana Business Quarterly at the request of the forum’s executive board and former Executive Director Tom McDermott. The inaugural cover of its first quarterly issue featured Region real estate and advertising mogul the late Dean White, founder and CEO of Whiteco Industries.
In 2009, Glee formed May Communications Group LLC and obtained ownership as publisher and CEO of the quarterly magazine. Throughout the years, the magazine’s regional success was highly credited to her committed tradition for hand-selecting an executive editorial and advisory board, comprised of local business leaders and visionaries. Their role was to dig deep for story ideas that were essential to local businesses, organizations and the community.
In 2016, after a courageous fight, Glee lost her two-year battle with cancer. Her colleagues recall and attest to her dedication and passion for providing in-depth, informative articles using reputable sources. Glee’s legacy and mission continue today in Northwest Indiana Business Magazine.
Linker Media Group and its current CEO Troy Linker purchased the magazine, moving it back to the Region in spring 2016. Having spent the previous 17 years in nonprofit publishing in Chicago with the American Library Association, Troy was looking for a new challenge closer to his home in Dyer. The magazine was a perfect combination of his love of entrepreneurship and his commitment to publishing helpful, reliable information.
Under Troy’s leadership and with the hard work and dedication of its local editorial advisory board, editors, writers and photographers, the magazine has continued to succeed and grow. Growing once again in 2018 by adding two additional issues per year, for a total of six issues annually. The increased frequency led to changing the publication’s name to Northwest Indiana Business Magazine in February 2018.
Today Northwest Indiana Business Magazine serves its readers with quality information and articles. Its mission is to publish ideas that inform, inspire, challenge and educate local business and community leaders to improve the economy and quality of life in the Region. Its primary distribution includes the Northern Indiana Region and surrounding 10 counties, including Lake, Porter, La Porte, St. Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, Starke, Pulaski, Jasper and Newton, home to 1.36 million people. The current staff of the magazine carries on the values of its founder with a commitment to the integrity of its information and its role in promoting Northwest Indiana’s business community.
