A six-building retail, office development at Calumet Avenue and 45th Street is planned in Munster.

The development will feature 120,000 square feet of office and retail space, said developer Jay Lieser with 1st Metropolitan Builders in a statement. The development is planned in phases, with the first phase of office and retail space available in fall 2020.

“Munster is known for its first-class schools, homes and health care,” Lieser said. “I live here, work here and raise my kids here, (and) I am proud of our community and want to do my part to improve it.”

He said the development will draw on the Region’s heritage of steel and rail. The center of the walking campus includes container architecture, which will offer unique local shops.

Lieser said Sparkman Wharf in Tampa, Fla., and Stackt in Toronto, Canada, are examples where communities have used container architecture to revitalize under-used land and create cultural experiences.

“This is a significant place-making development that incorporates the high-quality and pedestrian-centric design our community looks for,” said Dustin Anderson, Munster town manager. “The town of Munster is very pleased to work with Mr. Lieser on facilitating this unique project.”
