Indiana’s metro area jobless rates edge up in August

Indiana Department of Workforce DevelopmentJobless rates in many of the state’s metropolitan areas saw a small increase in August from July.

The jobless rate for the Gary metro area was 4.8 percent, up from 4.6 percent in July but down from 5.1 percent in August 2017, according to the latest figures released by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

In the Elkhart-Goshen metro area, the jobless rate for August was 2.9 percent, up from 2.6 percent in July but at the same level where it was in August 2017.

Michigan City-La Porte area unemployment rate for August was 4.4 percent, up from 4.2 percent in July but down from 4.6 percent in August 2017.

The South Bend-Mishawaka jobless rate in August was 4 percent, up from 3.9 percent in July but down from August 2017’s jobless rate of 4.2 percent.

The state’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate for August was 3.5 percent, up from 3.4 percent in July but down from 3.6 percent in August 2017. The U.S. jobless rate in August was 3.9 percent, which was unchanged from July but down from 4.4 percent in August 2017.
