SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Silver Hawks have completed their 2012 season in the newly refurbished Coveleski Stadium where attendance was up 68 percent over last year. A total of 189,575 fans attended games this year, ranking the Silver Hawks 11th in the 16-team Midwest League.
President Joe Hart said the total surpassed the goal of 170,000 fans the team had set at the beginning of the season.
South Bend invested $8.75 million in stadium upgrades over the past two years, along with an additional $2.85 million from owner Andrew Berlin. The upgrades include new concession items, outdoor patio suites, replacing bleachers with chair-back seats, renovated upper deck suits, a splash pad, a new playground and an outdoor family entertainment area.
As a result of the upgrades, Coveleski Stadium received the 2012 Ballpark Renovation of the Year award from ballparkdigest.com.
