NIPSCO is beginning an upgrade to the town of Winfield's electrical system starting Feb. 12.

The Merrillville-based utility company will install about 165 utility poles, 10 miles of wire and a new electrical substation.

The Northern Indiana Public Service Co. said in a press release that the work will result in fewer service outages and reduce the amount of work needed to maintain the system. The upgrade also will support economic expansion in the area.

Work will include lane and road closures on East 117th Avenue and Randolph Street, along with 109th (east of Randolph), Decatur Street, State Street and Benton Street.

NIPSCO officials said they are working with town officials to minimize the inconvenience to residents during the project. They expect work to conclude at the end of the year.
