Merrillville recently unveiled the town’s new slogan: “The Heart of the Region.”

“Our town is a dynamic blend of economic vitality, cultural diversity and warm hospitality,” said Rick Bella, town council president, in a press release. “The adoption of ‘The Heart of the Region' as our slogan reflects our commitment to embracing this identity and welcoming all who come to experience the unique energy of Merrillville.”

During a months-long campaign to choose a new slogan, Merrillville residents submitted over 40 suggestions. Town leaders narrowed it down to five options, and then the community voted.

“The Heart of the Region” received almost 70% of the votes.

Merrillville resident Candi Colvin submitted the slogan suggestion “The Heart of the Region.” Colvin said that the slogan immediately popped into her head when she saw the town was accepting suggestions. To Colvin, the slogan captures the spirit of Merrillville because the town is located in the middle of Lake County, and Merrillville plays a central role in driving the vitality of Northwest Indiana.

“We’re building new places to live, we’re building new places for people to work, we’re building new places for people to come and see us and making it beautiful,” Colvin said. “We want people to come here and live and enjoy our town.”

Town leaders recognized Colvin during the council meeting Feb. 27 before unanimously accepting “The Heart of the Region” as the official town slogan.

“I really appreciate that she participated in our slogan program because she’s making history in the town of Merrillville,” said Rhonda Neal, town council vice president.

The new slogan is already featured on Merrillville’s website and on the town’s social media pages. The slogan will be included in new welcome signage and promotional materials.
