Gary Chamber celebrates Black History Month

The Gary Chamber of Commerce will welcome Vernon Williams as a guest speaker at an upcoming luncheon.

A Gary native, Williams is a writer and educator. He was one of the first reporters for the Gary Post-Tribune. He now writes a weekly column for The Chicago/Gary Crusader Newspaper.

Williams will speak at the Gary Chamber of Commerce’s monthly general membership meeting and luncheon. The event will be at noon Feb. 12 at The Chateau Banquets in Merrillville. Seats for the luncheon are $25 and can be reserved by calling the chamber’s office at 219-885-7407.

Williams is the communication and community engagement strategist for Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis. He was the first Black assistant to the chancellor for communications at IUPUI. Williams is the former vice president communications for Indiana Black Expo.

Attendees can learn more about the history of Gary and its rich traditions. The fireside chat format will celebrate Gary’s culture, heritage and community.

The Gary Chamber of Commerce promotes the interest of businesses that contribute to a positive and stable economic climate in Gary. The volunteer organization is comprised of business owners, community members and citizens. The chamber runs monthly meetings, seminars and special events.
