The long-vacant building at 1425 Glendale Blvd. in Valparaiso is being transformed into a new two-story medical center.
Viking Medical Center will be a 43,500-square-foot medical facility ready to house a variety of medical tenants. The facility is an ambitious project by Calumet City-based Hasse Construction.
“Finishing out this project is not an easy task and we’re so pleased that a local hero has taken it on,” Valparaiso Mayor Jon Costas said in a recent press release.
A tax abatement was unanimously approved at a city council meeting to facilitate the project.
The building broke ground in 2018 before the initial developer filed bankruptcy and abandoned the project. It was originally designed as a renal care facility. Hasse Construction will complete the project as a spec medical facility, available for medical tenants to customize their own spaces.
The project was about 40% complete before it was abandoned. Finishing will require remediating the building that was open to the elements during the interrupted building process. When completed, the project will represent an investment of over $15 million.
The building is scheduled to open in early 2025. It is projected to create 60 jobs with an average annual salary of $90,000.
Hasse Construction has its roots in Northwest Indiana. The firm has 104 years of experience in the commercial, industrial, institutional, health care and municipal fields. Hasse Construction’s recent projects include Porter Business Park and St. Mary Medical Center in Valparaiso, the Kankakee Welcome Center on southbound I-65 and Bulldog Park in Crown Point.
