Franciscan Health Crown Point’s emergency department is one of 13 in the nation to receive PACED Gold Level accreditation.

The American College of Emergency Physicians awards the Pain and Addiction Care in the Emergency Department (PACED) accreditation. Gold Level PACED accreditation recognizes emergency departments with comprehensive programs to care for patients suffering from pain and/or addiction. The programs include treatment, protocols, training and resources.

“We are honored and privileged to receive this accreditation as it took a lot of hard work and collaboration with our multidisciplinary team in order to achieve,” said Erin DiMichelle, Franciscan Health Crown Point nursing director of critical care services, in a press release.

One of the application requirements was sharing policies and procedures impacting pain and addiction care. Emergency departments provide information about accountability for the amount of opioid pain medications given to patients. They also detail how the department utilizes other methods for treating pain and the ability to treat addiction.

“Franciscan Health Crown Point has had a team dedicated to patients with addiction presenting to the hospital for several years,” Jennifer Homan, Franciscan Health Crown Point manager of trauma services, said.

In 2023, Franciscan Health Crown Point was awarded the Peregrine Award for Trauma Innovation by Peregrine Health Services for its efforts to improve the treatment of patients with substance use disorders.

The hospital’s PACED accreditation will remain in place for three years.

The Franciscan Alliance health care ministry began in Lafayette in 1875. Today, Franciscan Alliance has 12 hospital campuses in Indiana and Illinois. The health care system network has primary and specialty care providers at over 260 locations.
