The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra announced open auditions for the 19th annual Hoosier Star Vocal Competition.

The competition brings together amateur singers who compete to win cash prizes and the title of 2024 Hoosier Star. Contestants are divided into youth (17 years old and younger) and adult (18 years old and older) age groups. Singers can complete individually or in duets.

Five contestants in each age group advance to the final event Sep. 14 where they sing a solo with the orchestra. Audience members and a panel of judges choose the two winners in each age group. First-place winners receive $1,000 and second-place winners receive $500.

The orchestra is hosting auditions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 16 and 1 to 5 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of La Porte. The Hoosier Star website provides more information and audition forms.  Audition forms must be received by March 12 to guarantee an audition time slot. Contestants must be residents of Indiana or Berrien County, Michigan.

The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra is in its 51st season. The professional orchestra has 60 musicians. The orchestra presents four subscription concerts each year, along with the Hoosier Star competition, Holiday at the Pops and children’s education concerts.
