The Climate Leadership Summit is coming to Gary in September — the first time it will convene in Northwest Indiana.
This year's eighth annual statewide conference is in partnership with Indiana University Northwest. Sessions will take place Sept. 8 at the Gary campus.
The conference targets mayors, and city, town, county and community leaders to discuss ways to strengthen resiliency to climate change. This year, experts will focus on making plans for possible outcomes and taking advantage of federal funding opportunities.
Earth Charter Indiana, the city of Gary, the city of Portage, Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission, the Michigan City Commission on Sustainability and Indiana University Northwest will co-host the event.
The conference also will include the second meeting of the Sustainability Commissioners and the first meeting of the Hoosier City and Town Councilors for Climate Action. A youth leadership session will be offered too.
On Sept. 7, Earth Charter Indiana and NWI Green Drinks are co-hosting a free screening of two short documentary films about the Region: “Shifting Sands” and “Liminal.” The showings start at 7 p.m. at the IUN School Arts and Sciences Main Stage Theatre, 3415 Broadway, Gary. Sign up here.
Tickets for the in-person conference are $40, but is free for all city, county employees, elected officials and students. The registration deadline is Aug. 25.
