Two schools in Northwest Indiana were selected to compete in the We the People state final Dec. 10-11.

Union Township Middle School in Valparaiso and Hobart High School will compete against middle and high school Hoosier students across the state.

We the People is an instructional program hosted by the Indiana Bar Foundation. The program teaches students about the history and principles of American constitutional democracy. Students explore the history, philosophies, application and evolution of the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and other founding documents. They research and analyze historical and contemporary issues and participate in a simulated legislative hearing.

In addition to the state competition, on Dec. 10, the middle school students will have an opportunity to witness a naturalization ceremony of approximately 100 individuals being admitted as new citizens of the United States. Indiana Bar Foundation board member Hon. James Sweeney of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will preside over the ceremony.

Middle and high schools participate in regional We the People competitions. This year 13 middle schools and 13 high schools were selected to compete in the state final. The final will take place at the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Downtown Union Station.

State champions will represent Indiana in the national We the People competitions this spring. The High School We the People National Finals will take place April 9-11 outside of Washington, DC. The Middle School We the People National Invitational will take place April 25-26 via Zoom.
