Valparaiso University’s bioengineering and environmental engineering bachelor’s degree programs recently became accredited.
The two programs were accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The commission accredits college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.
“We're very pleased that both bioengineering and environmental engineering have been accredited by ABET, ensuring that those programs maintain the highest level of quality,” said Doug Tougaw, College of Engineering dean, in a press release.
Environmental engineering students will focus on using their knowledge of chemistry and biology to improve the quality of air, soil and water. They will take advantage of the university’s proximity to Lake Michigan to gain hands-on experience.
Bioengineering combines engineering and physiology. The program will help teach students to improve lives by working with the human body.
The accreditation board examines program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support. The nonprofit organization currently accredits 4,564 programs in 40 countries and areas.
“Earning an ABET-accredited degree from any of our six programs will help our graduates to pursue professional licensure and graduate school admission, allowing them to achieve all of their professional goals,” Tougaw said.
Valparaiso University serves about 3,000 students. The university offers over 70 undergraduate programs. Valparaiso University has a Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Engineering, Nursing and Health Professions and Christ College — The Honors College.
