The Valparaiso-based Urban League of Northwest Indiana will present its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Symposium on March 14.

Themed “Defend Democracy, Demand Diversity and Defeat Poverty,” the event will include interactive sessions for adults and high school students throughout the Region. Adults will select workshops designed to enhance their awareness of DEI. Youth will participate in discussions that involve a variety of topics.

“The inclusion of students in the 2024 DEI Symposium continues to be a welcomed addition to our line-up,” said Vanessa Allen-McCloud, Urban League of NWI President and CEO, in a press release. “We look forward to their diverse perspectives and the value they add through creative solutions for equality. It is our goal to engage even more young people as the symposium continues to grow.”

The workshop topics include:

  • Systemic discrimination in legislation
  • Implementing DEI training in your organization and community
  • Addressing wealth inequities with innovative and strategic solutions
  • Critical Race Theory
  • Post DEI Training: What does DEI look like after implementation?

Groups that are slated to attend include grassroots organizations, business and corporate administrators, affirmative action officers, educators, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, public safety and human resources personnel.

The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 14 at Valparaiso University’s Harre Union. Find registration information here.

“Valparaiso University is pleased to support and host the DEI Symposium – to defend democracy, defeat poverty, and demand inclusion,” said José Padilla, Valparaiso University president. “We all have an obligation to our fellow brothers and sisters.”

Founded over 78 years ago, the Urban League of NWI promotes cultural diversity and economic opportunities in African American and minority communities. The league supports community collaborations and programs that fuel change in Lake, Porter, and La Porte counties. The nonprofit organization recently launched a free entrepreneurship program.
