VALPARAISO – Volunteers are being sought for the United Way Regional Volunteer Center's VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program. The program helps community members prepare and file their taxes for free. VITA helped nearly 500 people in Porter, Starke and LaPorte counties last year.

The service is available to taxpayers whose adjusted gross income is $50,000 or less, the elderly and disabled. Hours in Porter County are from late January to mid-April.

Volunteers are asked to provide three to six hours per week. All training and materials are free. Training can be done in person or online. An open house for the program is 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the United Way of Porter County, 951 Eastport Centre Road. For more information, call George Kuebler at (219) 464-3583, Ext. 128.
