SOUTH BEND – Efforts to sell the 25-story Chase Tower in downtown South Bend received a blow when the building’s largest tenant announced it was moving out.
The Summit Club, which has been a tenant since 1971, closed, laying off 25 people. The building, which has been marketed for anywhere from $15 million to $25 million, has lost several tenants in recent months due to faulty elevators, a leaking roof and problems with heating and air conditioning.
City officials have declined to help pay for some $6 million in immediate repairs that would make the building more attractive to buyers.
Chase Tower is the tallest building in Northwest Indiana.
