GARY – Production will begin later this year on a substitute product for coke that will be used in the steelmaking process at Gary Works and the Mon Valley facility in Pennsylvania.
The technology is owned by Carbonyx Inc. and uses two carbon alloy substitutes. As much as half a million tons of the project can be produced at Gary and 1 million tons at Mon Valley.
Developing the coke substitute cost $220 million. The Carbonyx process will reduce airborne pollutants.
