SOUTH BEND – Mayor Steve Luecke has announced a special fitness challenge to the community that encourages residents to become more fit by taking part in the city’s annual Sunburst Races June 3-4.

“The city of South Bend remains committed to the health and wellness of all employees and dependents,” said Leucke. “Through our Health and Wellness program, we encourage all employees to be actively involved in knowledge of our healthcare benefits and to focus on what each employee can do to remain healthy, to improve their health and wellness, and thus improve their lives and their longevity.”

This year is the 28th Sunburst Race and Leucke said the city is looking for 10,000 entrants, which would top last year’s record of 9,600 entrants. The event generates $750,000 for the local economy, said Leucke and includes a full marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K runs and a 5K fitness walk.
