MICHIGAN CITY – Save the Dunes will mark its 60th anniversary on June 21.

“Ever since the culmination our 16-year effort to get Congress to authorize the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966, Save the Dunes has been working hard to protect what our founders helped to preserve all those years ago,” said Nicole Barker, executive director.

Over the years, the park has expanded from 8,330 acres to more than 15,000 acres. Save the Dunes said its work is not done as 10 percent of land available to the park has not yet been purchases.

“Anniversaries are a time to reflect on one’s past, and to also look towards the future. We have accomplished much in our 60 years as an organization, but we did not do these things alone,” said Barker.
