EAST CHICAGO – Safety-Kleen’s re-refinery plant in East Chicago has been acquired by Clean Harbors Inc. of Norwell, Mass., for $1.25 billion.
Safety-Kleen is based in Richardson, Texas, and besides the East Chicago plant, which has 80 employees, has 200 other plants in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Corporate wide, Safety-Kleen has 4,200 employees.
It reprocesses about 200 million gallons of oil annual, refining it and returning it to the marketplace as reusable motor oil.
Since 2008, the East Chicago plant has been expanded twice with total investments of $30 million.
Clean Harbors serves 60,000 customers through 200 locations in 38 states and Canada.
