Efforts to be among the nation’s top-performing schools measured by state and national testing as well as initiatives to close achievement gaps among student groups has landed national honors for a Region elementary school.

Kolling Elementary School in St. John, part of the Lake Central School Corp., was among eight Indiana schools named by the Department of Education as 2020 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

The other 2020 National Blue Ribbon School honorees from Indiana include: Boone Meadow School, Whitestown; Cedarville Elementary School, Fort Wayne; Harris Elementary School, Greenfield; Herron High School, Indianapolis, Ireland Elementary School, Ireland; North Salem Elementary School, North Salem; and Speedway Senior High School, Speedway.

The award affirms the work of educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content, according to the Department of Education. Now in its 38th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has issued nearly 10,000 awards to more than 9,000 schools, with some schools winning multiple awards.

Honorees will be recognized in a virtual event set for Nov. 12-13.
