WASHINGTON – The St. Lawrence Seaway has announced that in July shipments totaled 17 million metric tons, up 7.3 percent from 2010. The increase was led by bulk materials for construction, salt, petroleum products and Canadian grain.
Year-to-date salt tonnage was up 46 percent to 1.2 million metric tons as U.S. cities stockpiled salt for the coming winter. Year-to-date stone shipments were 286,000 metric tons; iron ore was 1 million metric tons; Canadian grain was 2.7 million metric tons and U.S. grain was 85,000 metric tons. Petroleum was 1.5 million tons, twice the figure from one year ago.
At the same time those figures were announced, the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor was recognized by the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp. with the Robert J. Lewis Pacesetter Award for having the biggest increase in tonnage from 2009 to 2010.
The Port of Indiana increased tonnage 73 percent to 351,600 metric tons of international cargo, primarily wind turbine components, steel and construction equipment.
