South Shore LegendsNominations are open for the latest class of South Shore Legends at the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority in Hammond.

Legends are individuals or teams whose accomplishments “resonate in and beyond Northwest Indiana.” The Wall of Legends Project is sponsored by the BP Whiting Refinery. Nominations are open through Sept. 2.

“BP is pleased to continue sponsoring the legends program, which showcases the men and women who have made significant contributions toward making Northwest Indiana the thriving community it is today,” said Dave Kurt, Whiting refinery manager and a long-time Indiana resident. “The rich history of these legends is an inspiration to all of us who live and work here.”

New legends will be inducted in December.

Legends are individuals, alive or deceased, who have made “lasting implications” and have lived or worked in the seven counties of Northwest Indiana, including Jasper, Lake, La Porte, Newton, Porter, Pulaski and Starke. Those chosen are considered “trailblazers” and “exemplars” whose records of personal conduct serve as an example for others.

Legends are historical contributors, not modern-day innovators, said John Davies, founder and program coordinator. Legends inducted in 2019 include George Ade; Thomas G. Katsahnias and Dr. Harold E. Scheub.

Nominations can be submitted through the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority website. Nominations also can be emailed to John Davies or by mail to South Shore CVA, 7770 Corinne Drive, Hammond, Ind., 46323.
