SOUTH BEND – New Energy Corp., which operates an ethanol refinery on South Bend’s far south side, announced it will idle the facility for the winter, putting 40 people out of work.
The reason for the decision was the economy, said President Russ Abarr.
“We’ve been looking at what we can do and trying to avoid it. The decision to lay off long-standing, dedicated employees of New Energy was extremely difficult,” he said.
New Energy opened 28 years ago. Abarr also announced the refinery also is for sale. Although he was non-committal, Abarr said he expected the plant to re-open in the spring.
