Jobless rates drop in several northern Indiana metro areas

Unemployment rates fell in several northern Indiana metro areas in October.

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data, reported the jobless rate in the Gary metro area was 3.7% in October, down from 4.1% and down from 6.9% in October 2020.

In the Michigan City-La Porte area, the October jobless rate was 3.4%, down from 3.8% in September and down from 6.9% in October 2020.

The Elkhart-Goshen area’s jobless rate in October was 1.8% in October, down from 2% in September and down from 4.3% in October 2020.

The South Bend-Mishawaka area’s jobless rate in October was 2.9%, down from 3.4% in September and down from 6.3% in October.

Indiana’s seasonally adjusted jobless rate in October was 3.3%, down from 3.5% in September. The U.S. jobless rate in October was 4.6%.

The state’s labor force in October was 3,313,120, with 3,230,166 employed and 82,954 out of work.
