CROWN POINT – Inspired by a volunteer spirit, a group of Crown Point youngsters raised $80 to benefit the St. Clare Health Clinic food pantry recently by running a lemonade-concession stand at an annual, two-day, two-family garage sale in the Pine Hills subdivision. The children went shopping with St. Clare food pantry volunteer Val Giacomin and delivered a wealth of items to the clinic on July 18. Emma Riffle, 9, an Eisenhower Elementary School fourth-grader organized the effort after assisting Giacomin in the food pantry and deciding she wanted to do more to help those in need. She was assisted by A.J. Lux, 8, an Eisenhower third-grader, who “just wanted to help,” and Jack Lux, 5.
The clinic is in constant need of donations of nonperishable food items, paper goods, including toilet paper; laundry detergent and personal care products, such as deodorant, shampoo and soap; for the pantry. The clinic, which is under the auspices of Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Crown Point, provides free primary health care and other services for Northwest Indiana residents who fall within established income guidelines, are uninsured and are not eligible for government assistance.
Donations may be brought to the clinic, 1121 S. Indiana Ave., between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
