HAMMOND – A $7.7 million expansion is being planned by Amsted Rail. The company has been in the city for more than 100 years and manufactures springs for rail cars.

Amsted, formerly known as American Steel Foundries, is asking the city of Hammond for a 10-year tax abatement for its location on Hohman Avenue. If granted, the abatement would save Amsted more than half a million dollars.

The expansion would create 21 new jobs.
