PORTER – Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is seeking 30 volunteers to help dress up Cowels Bog from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 30.

The Indiana Coastal Cooperative Weed Management Area, along with NIPSCO’s Environmental Action Team and the lakeshore are organizing the event.

The goal is to restore the area to the way it was when Henry Cowles roamed the dunes. Restoration efforts on the NIPSCO berm along the southern boundary of the bog and west of Mineral Springs Road will be done.

Volunteers will also cut invasive and undesirable shrubs and small trees.

Those interested should bring water, safety glasses and gloves, wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants and covered toe shoes. Parking is available at Mineral Springs Road north of U.S. 12.

NIPSCO will provide a picnic lunch at National Lakeshore headquarters picnic area after the work session. For more information, call Lynda Lancaster at (219) 395-1682 or e-mail Lynda_Lancaster@nps.gov.
