INDIANAPOLIS – Major changes could be coming to the U.S. Postal Service in Indiana. The USPS is looking at way to increase efficiency and improve productivity and among the alternatives being explored is closing the mail processing centers in Gary and South Bend.

The two centers employ more than 400 people.

Gary’s operation could be transferred to Bedford Park, Ill., and the South Bend operations could be transferred to Fort Wayne.

“South Bend, along with six other facilities in greater Indiana, they’re looking to either consolidate or close as part of network optimization to bring it under a tighter system,” said USPS spokeswoman Mary Dando.

Other centers in Indiana that could be closed are in Bloomington, Kokomo, Muncie, and Lafayette.

The review is being conducted because first class mail has declined by 25 percent over the past five years nationwide.
