Steel industry production up 7.9 percent

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The American Iron and Steel Institute, which monitors the domestic steel industry, has announced as production of steel in the United States rose 7.9 percent in 2011 compared to the previous year.

Total production by U.S. producers was 95.6 million tons, up from 88.6 million tons in 2010.

At the same time, domestic steel mills operated at 75 percent of capacity in 2011, up from 70 percent last year.
