INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana’s unemployment rate in August was 3.5 percent, up from July which recorded a jobless rate of 3.4 percent.

The state, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics data, said while Indiana’s jobless rate increased in August, it still ran lower than the nation’s unemployment rate for the month which was 3.9 percent. The monthly unemployment rate reflects the number of unemployed people seeking employment within the prior four weeks as a percentage of the labor force.

Indiana’s labor force had a net increase of 11,085 in August when compared to July. The state said that was a result of a 2,594 increase in unemployed residents and an increase of 8,491 employed residents.

Indiana's total labor force, which includes residents employed and those seeking employment, stood at 3.39 million in August.

The state’s 65 percent labor force participation rate remains above the national rate of 62.7 percent.
