HAMMOND – The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority closed 2012 with an increase in the total estimated economic impact to the region. Large events such as the nationally televised Leon’s Triathlon and the National Softball Association’s Girls Fast Pitch ‘B’ World Series, and conventions and campaigns like Bring it Home resulted in more visitors and helped sell more hotel rooms.
The sports department brought in events like NSA and Leon’s Triathlon. These events delivered visitors to Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties from all over the nation. Room nights sold throughout 2012 due to sporting events totaled 9,033 with 59,870 visitors. Sporting event visitor spending on restaurants, hotels, attractions and other necessities brought in an estimated $2.388 million in economic impact.
Numerous conventions and conferences were brought to the region in 2012, bringing in a total of 9,346 room nights sold and 9,068 visitors. Convention visitor spending on restaurants, hotels, attractions and other necessities resulted in an estimated $2.25 million in economic impact to the area.
