VALPARAISO – Kankakee Valley REMC has donated $5,000 to Porter-Starke Services Foundation.

The money will be used in youth programs in Northwest Indiana to create team building exercises for elementary students. In addition it will be used to provide discounts for adolescent substance abuse treatment and scholarships to high school seniors impacted by or pursuing a career in behavioral healthcare.

“We really appreciate the support from Kankakee Valley REMC,” said Jessica McFadden, coordinator for the Porter-Starke Services Foundation. “It’s with support like this that we can continue to help meet the demand for behavioral healthcare services for our youth.”

The donation was possible through REMC’s Operation Roundup program where the Wanatah-based electric company automatically rounds up a participating member’s electric bill to the next highest dollar each month. The funds are used to grant to worthy causes throughout the area. Participation in the program is voluntary.

“Kankakee Valley REMC has a strong commitment to the area we serve, but the program is successful because our members share in that commitment,” said Amanda Steeb, marketing director for the electric utility.
