GRIFFITH – Since the launch of the Lake Area United Way/FamilyWize Prescription Drug Discount Card in April 2010, Lake County residents have saved more than $102,000.

Lake Area United Way said the average savings is 34 percent, or $18.82 per prescription. The card has been used 3,500 times, an average of 388 times a month.

“We knew the program was going to benefit a lot of people,” said Dave Sikes, director of allocations for LAUW. “It’s a win-win for individuals and families who use the card, the pharmacy and the community. We want to get the card into the hands of as many people as possible.”

FamilyWize cards work like a reusable coupon. There is no application fee or paper work to fill out. There are no age, income or citizenship restrictions. It covers everyone with no health insurance or prescription drug coverage.

United Way has distributed 30,000 cards through 32 member agencies and participating pharmacies. Sikes said that in 2011 the card will be distributed through area hospitals and health clinics, physicians and local businesses.
