Porter County tourism impact up 5.9 percent

PORTER – Indiana Dunes Tourism in Porter County has announced that 2011 showed a 5.9 percent increase in tourism and travel.

A report by Certec Inc. of Kentucky showed tourism and travel contributed $348.3 million to the Porter County economic, up by more than $36 million from 2009. The study showed that overnight visitors spent an average of $100 a day.

Tourism was responsible for 4,743 jobs in the county. Most visitors came for recreation and leisure while conventions accounted for 17 percent of visitors and sport, 4 percent.
