PORTAGE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced that will request funds to complete a dredging project at the Port of Indiana-Burns Harbor.

The project would clear 170,000 cubic yards of sand from the mouth of the port in order to improve access to Indiana’s only deepwater Lake Michigan port. Sand has built up at the entrance to the port and has made it more difficult for freighters to enter and leave.

The Corps of Engineers told port officials that money for the project likely won’t be available until 2013. Money for dredging comes from the Harbor Maintenance Tax which is paid by shippers.
