CHESTERTON – There will be a stakeholder meeting for those affected by the Little Calumet East Branch from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at the Westchester Public Library Meeting Room in Chesterton.
The meeting will provide information from Save the Dunes’ summer monitoring data results and photographs of the watershed taken by technical committee members.
The Little Calumet East Branch begins in unincorporated LaPorte County and flows west through unincorporated Porter County, the towns of Burns Harbor, Chesterton, Ogden Dunes, and Porter. The river drains nearly 50,000 acres of forest, agriculture, and developed lands.
Some sections of the river are degraded due to pollutants such as bacteria, sediment, and excess nutrients. Save the Dunes has been awarded a grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to coordinate the development of a watershed management plan.
