LAPORTE – The LaPorte County Commissioners have signed off on a plan that will allow an intermodal freight terminal to be built at the Kingsbury Industrial Park near the intersection of U.S. 35 and U.S. 6.

LaPorte County was delayed in making its final approval by the U.S. Army, which had to sign off on a utility easement through property occupied by a U.S. Army Reserve Center.

The project includes extending a sewer line by Kingsbury Utilities to the reserve center, and then construction of a two-mile rail extension to be built by CSX Railroad across Army property to the intermodal site.

LaPorte County has committee $6 million to the project, which ultimately include a cold storage warehouse where fruit and vegetables will be stored after being shipped from Florida.
