Insurance report ranks Indiana 9th in nation for most reported motorcycle thefts in 2017

Indiana ranked ninth in the nation for most reported motorcycle thefts in 2017.

That’s according to the latest annual report from the Illinois-based National Insurance Crime Bureau. A total of 44,268 motorcycles were reported stolen in 2017 compared with 46,467 reported stolen in 2016—a decrease of 5 percent, according to the report.

After several years of consecutive declines, motorcycle thefts increased in 2015 and 2016. However, 2017's result may signal a resumption of the downward trend, according to the report.

The top 10 states with the most reported motorcycles thefts in 2017 were:

1.       California (7,532)
2.       Florida (4,323)
3.       Texas (3,525)
4.       South Carolina (1,732)
5.       North Carolina (1,632)
6.       New York (1,547)
7.       Missouri (1,409)
8.       Georgia (1,235)
9.       Indiana (1,204)
10.   Arizona (1,057)

The top 10 most stolen motorcycles in 2017 by manufacturer included:

1.       American Honda Motor Co. Inc. (8,781 thefts)
2.       Yamaha Motor Corp. (7,298)
3.       American Suzuki Motor Corp. (5,530)
4.       Harley Davidson Inc. (5,138)
5.       Kawasaki Motors Corp. U.S.A. (5,101)
6.       Taotao Group Co. Ltd (2,305)
