WASHINGTON, D.C. – Cary Supalo, a Purdue University alumnus and founder and president of Independence Sciences LLC (located in the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette) was at the White House Monday demonstrating his products to help students affected by blindness and low vision.
Supalo, a blind chemist who recently earned a doctorate in chemistry from Penn State, met with Kareem Dale, associate director of the White House Office and Public Engagement, and Jessie DeAro, senior policy analyst in the Office of Science and Technology Policy.
“We are honored to share Independence Science’s products and services that empower students affected by blindness or low vision with the current administration,” said Supalo. “Our mission always has been to inspire this population – which is underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – to consider career paths in these areas.”
One product being demonstrated was Talking LabQuest, which collects and stores scientific data like acceleration and pH level, and uses a text-to-speech software developed by Independence Sciences that make information displayed on its LCD screen audible.
